Meet Amy

Why I’m running

My name is Amy Phillips and I am running for the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners because I believe in the power of community and I want to give back to an organization that has meant so much to me and my family.

My family and I have lived in Naperville for over 17 years. We raised our kids in park district programs — from so many sports to the arts and nature programming. My husband David and I walk the Riverwalk every day with our two dogs, Woody and Milo. And I have professionally collaborated with NPD staff for many years, so I am familiar with the organization and how exceptional it is.

I would welcome the opportunity to help steward the future of our park district in three ways — read about them below.

Most of all, I am a member of this community, and I want to represent your interests. Please let me know what you are concerned about or excited for by emailing amyfornaperville@gmail.com or finding me on Instagram or Facebook at amyfornaperville.

Thank you!

Health & Wellness

Expanding Access to Outdoor Health & Wellness

High quality open space is crucial to the quality of life for our community, and I will be a tireless advocate to get residents off of screens and into the parks for their mental and physical health. Through my work with a local conservation non-profit, I facilitate the DuPage Nature Rx Coalition, which empowers organizations to enhance the health of their communities by connecting people with nature and the abundance of open space available throughout DuPage County.

I have personally experienced the benefits of time spent outdoors that has helped reduce stress, increase attention, and improve mood. As the mother of two teenagers, I know mental health is a critical issue for our community — and I will champion expanding the park district’s already high quality programming further into this space.

Conservation

Championing Environmental Sustainability & Conservation

Protecting our shared environment and quality of life for future generations has been the thread woven throughout my career — from being on the forefront of sustainable architecture to the conservation programming I do now. The Naperville Park District is a regional leader in native plantings and sustainable landscaping, and its facilities incorporate many clean energy, water conserving, and biodiversity enhancing features.

I supported the last referendum and was proud that open space land purchasing was included in the list of priorities. I will champion future initiatives such as these as part of the master plan and general operating procedures.

Oversight

Providing Responsible Oversight

I was previously appointed as a member of the DuPage County Board, so I have direct experience on a governance board and understand its role in financial oversight and setting the strategic direction for a large institution. As a former architect who spent time on job sites and with trade coordination and budgeting, I am excited to provide responsible oversight for the new recreation center.

Architects know how to work with others to get things done, and I have the experience to ask tough questions while keeping my focus on the big picture.
